- Virginia Bee's birthdate, January 1 1863, was the same day that President Lincoln announced passage of the legislation establishing the State of West Virginia. Tradition has it that when Ephraim Bee learned of this historic event, he promptly renamed his daughter West Virginia Bee. In the 1870 Census she was indeed listed as West Va Bee, and she was identified in her daughter Mary Pauline (Zinn) Duskey's death record as West Virginia Bee. However she was identified in the 1880 Census and in her marriage and death records as Virginia Bee. Census records of her adult years indicate that she was more commonly known as Jennie.
