    Notes
    • The Minute Book of the August 1848 term of Doddridge County Court contains the following entry:
"Aldridge Sayre, Letta Sayre and Sarah Sayre, orphans of Hiram T. Sayre, deceased, with the approbation of the court, made a choice of Isaac C. Smith for their guardian, who together with William I. Boreman and Eli Conaway his securities, entered into and acknowledged three several bonds on the penalty of two hundred dollars each with condition according to law."
NOTE: A guardian is a competent adult appointed by the court to manage the property ownership of those incompetent to do so by reason of youth or mental or physical handicap. In many cases in that era, a male guardian was appointed even if the mother was still alive, which was the case here. Perhaps women at that time were considered incapable of handling property and financial affairs.

1850 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Aug 23 1850:
Mary Sayre, 43, value of real estate $900; Nancy M, 18; Holdridge, 16, farmer; Lettuce, 14; Sarah M, 10; Solomon Weekly, 4. All born in Virginia except Mary, born in Pennsylvania.
The next enumerated household was that of Mary's daughter and son-in-law Jane & William Sweeney and their children.
NOTE: The relationship between Solomon Weekly and this family is not known. In the 1860 Census, he was enumerated in Doddridge County in the household of Thomas & Elizabeth (Smith) Smith.
