Notes for: John Peyton
The spelling of this family's surname varies from one record to the next, appearing with about equal freqency as both Payton and Peyton. The latter seems to be the preferred spelling.
1850 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Aug 5 1850:
Mary Payton, 60, value of real estate $300, cannot read/write; Abigal Payton, 57, cannot read/write; Lewis Payton, 24, farmer; John Payton, 22, farmer; Franklin Payton, 21, farmer. All born in Virginia.
NOTE: In the 1850 Census, relationships between the household members were not stated. However, it is known from the will of Miss Abigal Payton, probated in Doddridge County in Feb 1853, that Franklin Payton was her nephew. Franklin Payton, aka Frank Peyton, later married Theresa Duncan and settled in Ohio.
