Notes for: John Gaston
Hanna's "Ohio Valley Genealogies," p. 48, contains an apparent misprint, in that it shows a John Gaston (b. 1746) as a son of Alexander (b. 1754), with that John in turn having a son John (b. 1786). Since this is an absolute impossibility, we conclude that the John (b. 1746) was actually meant to be a son of Alexander (b. 1714), which Hanna also shows. Burgess' "The Gaston Genealogy," p. 44, shows a John Gaston born 1/8/1786 to a John Gaston. Taking all this into account, we believe the lineage is correct as we present it. Burgess also shows other children born to a John Gaston in Berkshire Co, MA, in the same general time frame, but there is insufficient evidence to conclude (particularly since we don't know his wife's name) that that was the same John Gaston (b. 1746). Those children and their parents as listed were: Mary, b. 10/20/1774, dau of John & Miriam Gaston (prob the same as Mary, baptized 2/27/1786, dau of John Ghaston); Eunice, b. 11/16/1777, dau of John & Miriam Gaston (prob the same as Eunice, baptized 12/1/1785, dau of John Ghaston); Elizabeth, baptized 12/1/1785, dau of John Ghaston (poss the same as Elizabeth Gaston, b. 4/10/1784, parents not listed); Rachel, baptized 12/1/1785, dau of John Ghaston (poss the same as Rachel Gaston, b. 5/23/1780, parents not listed); Achsah, baptized 12/1/1785, dau of John Ghaston (poss the same as Achsa Gaston, b. 4/6/1782, parents not listed) (another entry shows Achsah Gaston, granddaughter of Dea. John Gaston, adopted by him and his wife and baptized on 7/21/1811); Harvey, b. 1/4/1788, son of John Ghaston; Joseph, b. 11/15/1789, son of John Ghaston; Harriot, b. 7/15/1792, dau of John Ghaston; and Abi, b. 10/16/1794, dau of John Ghaston.
