1930 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (Town of West Union), enumerated on Apr 14 1930 at 321 East Main Street:
Head of household Effie Cottrill, 40, no occupation. Marital status originally entered as married, with a penciled in modification to indicate widowed.
(NOTE: In that era, due to social stigma, it was not unusual for a divorced woman, or one who was estranged from her husband, to report her marital status as widowed. That appears to have been the case in this census, since Effie's husband, Smith Cottrill, was listed as a boarder, marital status married, in the household of Effie's brother George A. Swisher.)
