Notes for: Oliver Worthy West

News article, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, Nov 11 1915, in part:
SAM B. MONTGOMERY AND KID WEST
"Hon. Sam B. Montgomery and O. W. West, two of the happiest birds that ever lit on the shors of time, touched West Union Tuesday evening of last week to attend the Pythian blow-out. Many, many pairs of queer geniuses and quaint philosophers, gay old sports and royal good fellows, have hit this town since the days of DisDebar and 'Ephwim' Bee; but since these famous pioneers, there's nothing ever trespassed, or tarried as welcome guests, that can trim Sam and Worthy; they combine all the qualities mentioned above in the superlative degree.
"For a time we couldn't solve the problem whether Sam was traveling as West's mascot or whether Worthy was traveling as Sam's mascot. ... there smiled the laughing eyes and cheery face of Samuel B --- 'pwainer than the handwitting' of Ephwim Bee.
"... -- Hon. Sam B. Montgomery, the 'Silver-tongued orator of West Virginia,' and Kid West, 'the Hayseed of the Hills of Gilmer.' ..."

(NOTE: Samuel B. Montgomery (1876-1924) was a West Virginia State Senator from Preston County, and later the state labor commissioner. He was a prominent member of the Knights of Pythias, the Odd Fellows, the Elks, the Moose, and other fraternal organizations. Oliver Worthy West was described in his mother's obituary as being Grand Chancellor of K. of P.)
