Notes for: Mary Martha Gaston
Identified in her marriage record as Mary A. Gaston and in her obituary as Mary A. Haught, daughter of John H. Gaston and Jane Pritchard Gaston. Basis for middle initial "A" is not known, as her middle name has been determined to be Martha and her headstone clearly identifies her as Mary M. Conversely, the obituary of her son Marvel L. Haught identifies her as Mary Ellen Gaston, and she appears in the 1850 Census as Mary E. Gaston, age 6 months.
Her own obituary reads in part: "Mrs. Haught was born and reared and spent her entire long and useful life on the same farm in South West District. She was well known to many of the citizens of Doddridge County and was loved and revered by all who knew her; she was always kind and generous to the poor and was always attentive and helpful to the citizens of her community in times of sickness and distress. She lived a useful life, retaining her memory and optimism of life until a few days before she was called. When her life's work was finished, she fell asleep, assuring her relatives and friends that she was prepared to the change and that all was well with her."
