Notes for: Mary Underwood

Freeman Smith was orphaned when very young and was raised by Isaac Underwood, who later became his father-in-law.

1860 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Jun 20 1860:
Freeman Smith, 32, farmer, value of real estate $700, value of personal estate $200; Mary, 30; S. V. (female), 4; B. Davis (male), 1. All born in Virginia.
NOTE: The female S. V. Smith would be daughter Sarah. Identity of the Davis boy is not known. Also not known is why daughter Martha, born in 1858 according to her birth record and the 1870 Census, was not present for this census.

1870 Census, Tyler Co, WV (McElroy District), enumerated on Jul 18 1870:
Freeman Smith, 41, occupation milling, value of real estate $1,200, value of personal estate $500, cannot read/write; Mary, 40, cannot write; Sarah, 14; Martha, 12; Rachel, 10; Benton, 8; Samuel, 4; Jacob, 2; Silas, 7 months, birth month November.

1880 Census, Tyler Co, WV (McElroy District), enumerated in June 1880:
Freeman Smith, 51, laborer, cannot read/write; wife Mary, 50, cannot write; dau Rachel, 20, teacher; son William, 18, laborer, cannot write; son Samuel, 13; son Jacob, 11; son Austin, 8; granddau Elizabeth, 8.
