Lois Fox Fryer, M.D.

WEST UNION -- Lois Fox Fryer, M.D., 82, of Portsmouth, VA departed this life Saturday, March 27, 2004 at her residence.

She was born January 18, 1922 at Valley Chapel, WV, a daughter of the late Babb Lee and Madge Veneta Stutler Fox.

Dr. Fryer graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science and received her M.D. from Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA. She then went to Washington, D.C., where she served in the Anesthesia Department of the Prince George Hospital, Maryland.

Dr. Fryer continued her education at the Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn., where she became a Certified Member of the Board of Anesthesiology in 1960. In 1960, Dr. Fryer and Dr. Christian Creteur established the first anesthesiology practice in Portsmouth, VA, serving the Maryview and Portsmouth General Hospitals until retirement.

Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Richard L. Fox and wife Isabelle of St. Albans, WV; one sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Elaine Carroll and husband James of Somerset, N.J.; five nieces and three nephews.

The family wishes to extend special gratitude to Dr. Christian Creteur, Michael and Sandie Ellsworth, friends and neighbors, for the gift of friendship, support and kind loving care.

Dr. Fryer was an avid Bible scholar and spent much time in reading and studying the scriptures. She loved gardening and raising flowers and roses in her yard.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the Rose Hill Cemetery, West Milford, WV, with the Reverend Jim Messenger officiating.
