1860 Census, Harrison Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), Clarksburg Post Office:
Eli Sheets, 39, b. Virginia, farmer, value of real estate $2,300, value of personal estate $425; Tabitha Sheets, 36, b. Va; James W. Sheets, 8, b. Va; Aaron J. Sheets, 4, b. Va; Jacob Sheets, 78, b. Maryland, farmer; Nancy Sheets, 74, b. Md; James Towers, 64, b. Pa; Sarah Hufford, 17, b. Va.
The will of Jacob Sheets was written on Jun 22 1860 and submitted for probate in Harrison County on Aug 15 1860. The will reads, in part:
"... Out of the moneys arising from said sale, I devise and bequeath to Lemuel E. Sheets the sum of Ten Dollars, also to John Sheets, Ten Dollars, and to Eli Sheets One Dollar, the residue to my two daughters Jemima Prine and Minerva Jane Sheets, share and share alike. And I further desire that whatever monies I may die seized and in possession of or to which I may be entitled at the time of my decease shall become the property of my wife Nancy Sheets for her sole use and benefit and to be disposed of as she, the said Nancy Sheets, may deem proper. James E. Sheets, having received his portion of any estate as per his receipt of 6th day of February 1856, is therefore excluded from any further participation therein. And I further desire that in case of my demise previous to the July court of 1860 that my executor hereinafter named do sell in the town of Clarksburg then and there at public auction to the highest bidder a certain sorrel mare, taking bond and personal security for the purchase money of the same. Lastly I do nominate and appoint my son Eli Sheets to be my executor of this, my last will and testament. ..."
