Local news item, "West Union Record," Friday, Feb 23 1900, in its entirety:
"J. T. Johnston arrived in town from Lane, Kansas, Friday morning. Mrs. Johnston, who stopped off at Ada, Ohio, to visit her sister there will be on in a few days. The family, who have resided in Kansas for the last six or eight years, will again locate in West Union."

From the 1928 obituary of Mary Maulsby Johnston:
"Mrs. Johnston was well known to many citizens of Doddridge County, as her parents formerly resided in Lewisport, now Blockhouse, in West Union, and conducted a hotel and tannery for a number of years. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston owned the farm at Sunnyside, in Central District, where they made their home until they sold the farm to the County to be held by it as the County Farm."
