Notes for: Nancy Ellen "Nanny" Stewart
It is unclear whether his given name was Judge or Judson, as both were used over the years, but never together.
1870 Census, Ritchie Co, WV (Clay Twp), enumerated on Jul 30 1870:
S. R. Jones, 76, farmer, value of real estate (blank), value of personal estate $100, cannot write; Rutha, 56, cannot read/write; Judge N, 22, farm laborer, cannot write; Nancy, 19, cannot write; Lafayette, 20, cannot write; Frances, 21, cannot write.
NOTE: Nancy and Frances were the wives of Judge and Lafayette, respectively.
1880 Census, Ritchie Co, WV (Clay District), enumerated on Jun 5 1880:
Nelson Jones, 32, farm laborer, cannot write; wife Nancy, 28, cannot write; nephew Adam Richards, 12, cannot read/write.
1900 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (Southwest District), enumerated on Jun 13 1900:
Jedson (sic) N. Jones, 52, b. Aug 1847, farmer, can read, cannot write, married 30 yrs; wife Nancy E, 48, b. Sep 1851, can read, cannot write, married 30 yrs, no children; adopted daughter Sarah J. Leggett, 15, b. Nov 1884, attending school.
1910 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (Southwest District), enumerated on Apr 20 1910:
Judson Jones, 62, farmer (working out), married 48 yrs; wife Nanny, 57, married 48 yrs, no children.
1920 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (Southwest District), enumerated on Jan 17 1920:
Judge N. Jones, 72, farm worker (working out), can read, cannot write; wife Nancy E, 68, cannot read/write; lodger Clarence E. Husk, 14, farm laborer (working out).
NOTE: According to his death record and obituary, Clarence Everett Husk (1905-1958) was a son of Newt Husk and Rebecca Reed. We have found neither a birth record nor an entry for him in the 1910 Census.
Nancy died of tuberculosis at Summers on Jan 27 1925. Informant on her death record was Nelson Jones, Oxford. (The postal address of Summers community at that time was Oxford.)
In the 1930 Census of Doddridge County (Central District), enumerated on Apr 25 1930 at the Doddridge County Infirmary, one of the 19 "inmates" enumerated was:
Nelson Jones, 82, widowed, no occupation.
NOTE: The County Infirmary, also known as the County Poor Farm, was located at Sunnyside on old Route 50. Judson Nelson Jones died there in 1937 and was buried in the Infirmary cemetery.
