Notes for: Elizabeth Trough
Elizabeth, the wife of John C. Rickard and mother of Mary Catherine Rickard, is identifed as Elizabeth Clemmer in Susie Davis Nicholson's highly regarded "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 123. But we have found no other reference to her by that surname. Her children's marriage records, if they include a mother at all, identify her only by her first name. The death record of daughter Louisa Rickard Ringer, which incorrectly lists her father as William rather than John, identifies her mother as Elizabeth Trough, which corresponds to other findings of Rickard family researchers. Elizabeth's death is documented only by her headstone. We have found no death record for her, and no record of John C. Rickard after the 1860 Census.
1850 Census, Harrison Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated in July 1850:
John Rickards, 47, farmer; Elizabeth, 35; Mary, 18; Rosan, 15; Martha, 12; Emily, 10; William, 4; Virginia, 4 months. All born in Pennsylvania except for William and Virginia, born in Virginia.
NOTE: Elizabeth's age appears to be understated by ten years, based on her headstone and age 55 in the 1860 Census. Mary's place of birth is given in other records as Hagerstown, Maryland. This family is known from other records to have another daughter, Louisa, born in 1844. Her whereabouts in this census are unknown.
1860 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Jun 1 1860:
J. Rickard, 60, farmer, value of real estate $250, value of personal estate (blank); E. (female), 55; L. (female), 14; Wm., 13; Virginia, 8. All born in Virginia.
NOTE: The two adults, John and Elizabeth, are known from other records to have been born in Pennsylvania.
