| 43407 | Twice married, both of Marion Bruce Summers' wives were named Maude. His first wife, Maude B. Stalnaker, died before Jan 1920, probably in Pennsylvania where he was found as a widower in the 1920 Census. They had three children, Joseph, Marion and Betty. His second wife, Leota Maude Goff, was known almost exclusively by her middle name. She had two previous marriages, first to James R. Wass who died in 1912 and by whom she had daughters Helen and Virginia. Her 1917 marriage to Edgar Sylvester White, a native of Maine, apparently soon ended in divorce. Marion Bruce Summers and Maude White were in adjacent households in the 1920 Census of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is not known when or where they were married, but they were in Sarasota, Florida at the time of his 1928 death. Maude was still residing there with her daughter Virginia in the 1945 Census, and she is reported to have died there later that year. In November 1914, along with accomplice C. D. Martin, Marion Bruce Summers was found guilty on multiple counts of bank fraud, specifically the embezzlement of about $35,000 from the First National Bank of West Union. They were both sentenced to five years in the West Virginia state prison. 1910 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (West Union District, town of West Union), enumerated on Apr 18 1910: M. Bruce Summers, 40, occupation banker, married 6 yrs; wife Maude B, 30, mother of 2 children (both still living); son Joe D, 5; son Marion B, 1; roomer Adaline Tschudi, 32, b. Maryland, single, occupation dressmaker. Census entries indicated that the family residence was a house rather than a farm, that it was owned rather than rented, and that it was without a mortgage. 1920 Census, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania (city of Pittsburgh), enumerated on Jan 15 1920: M. B. Summers, 50, occupation manager at steel company, widowed; son Joe D, 16; dau Betty M, 2, b. Pennsylvania. In the next household: Maude White, 36, b. WVa (father b. WVa, mother b. Ohio), no occupation, widowed; dau Helen, 12; dau Opel, 10. (Note: Maude White's listed marital status is incorrect. | 43424 | Two versions of Mary Neely Hart's obituary have been found. Both versions indicate a death date of Friday, 13 Jan 1893, a date that did in fact fall on a Friday. But her headstone has a death date of 11 Jan 1893, while a descendant's SAR application shows it as 3 Jan 1893. There is no death record for her. (1) Clarksburg Telegram, Friday, January 20, 1893, in its entirety: Mrs. Mary N. Hart died suddenly about 12 o'clock Friday night at her home in this city. She had been complaining for several days, but was not thought to be dangerously ill. Sometime during the evening, Doctors Morgan and Howell were called in and remained but a short time. Near midnight she grew rapidly worse and expired before any of the near neighbors could be summoned. The Hart family, at the time of the mother's death, was composed of her daughter, Miss Lillie, her two sons Charles M. and John B. Hart, and their married sister Mrs. Chas. J. Goff. The father, Mr. Ira Hart, it will be remembered died from injuries received by being thrown out of a carriage on Main Street in 1879. The other daughter, Mrs. Wilson, lives in Pueblo, Colorado. Born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, he attended the Northwestern Virginia Academy, graduated from the Lexington Law School in 1856, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia house of Delegates in 1861, which was the formation of a new State loyal to the Union at the advent of the Civil War in 1861. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1868 and a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, (1869-70). In 1871, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress and reelected as an Independent Democrat to the Forty-third Congress, serving until 1875. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 80 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. His son John William Davis was also a U.S. Congressman. He was a professor of law at Washington and Lee University, (1896-97), member of the West Virginia State House of Delegates in 1899, delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1904, president of the West Virginia Bar Association in 1906 and a member of the West Virginia Commission on Uniform State Laws in 1909. In 1911, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second and Sixty-third Congresses, serving until 1913, when he resigned to be a member to conduct the impeachment proceedings against Robert W. Archbald, judge of the United States Commerce Court. He then was Solicitor General of the United States, (1913-18) and appointed Ambassador to the Court of St. James England, serving (1918-21). An unsuccessful Democratic candidate for President of the United States in 1924, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1932 and practiced law in New York, until his death at age 81 in Charleston, South Carolina.
