| 6003 | Although Doddridge County did not see any full-blown battles during the Civil War, there was a noteworthy "skirmish" that occurred in West Union on May 6, 1863. By that time in the Civil War, Confederate officers realized that the best way to cut off Union supplies and communications was to disable the B&O railroad. Under the command of Generals William E. Jones and John D, Imboden, Confederate forces were sent out to destroy bridges and tunnels all along the railroad that was referred to as "Lincolns lifeline" because of its importance in conveying troops and supplies. One local soldier who encountered the Jones-Imboden raid here in West Union was Joseph Stillman Jeffrey. Joseph was born May 6, 1838 in Doddridge County, the son of Joseph Jeffrey, Jr. and Tacy Davis. He enlisted on May 2, 1863 in Company A of Captain Josiah H. Bees 180th Militia Home Guard. He survived the Jones-Imboden Raid at West Union (on his 25th birthday), only to be accidentally shot with a musket on May 14, 1863. We do not know the circumstances surrounding the accident, only that he died from this wound the next day. Flavius Josephus Ashburn wrote about Josephs death in his diary. "On Thursday the 14th Stillman Jeffrey was accidentally shot through with a musket. After enduring excessive agony, until sometime in the night he expired." This is the only documentation we have for the circumstances of Joseph Stillman Jeffreys death. If not for that diary, Josephs story would have been lost in history. Although his headstone can no longer be located, we know from earlier cemetery readings that he is buried in the Seventh Day Baptist section of the Blockhouse Hill Cemetery in West Union. | 6006 | Although Findagrave and Ramage's "Doddridge County Cemeteries" report a birth date of Oct 24 1828, it is likely that the correct date is Oct 1832. That is the date given in the 1900 Census, and ages given in the 1850 thru 1880 censuses consistently indicate a birth date between 1831 and 1833. The Oct 1832 date also consistent with his parents' January 1832 marriage date. 1900 Census: age 67, b. Oct 1832 1880: age 48 = b. 1832 1870: age 39 - b. 1831 1860: age 27 = b. 1833 1850: age 19 = b. 1831 | GALLIEN, James (I88355)

He passed the bar exam and was admitted to the bar at West Union, Doddridge County, in 1848. He served two terms as prosecuting attorney of Doddridge County, and in 1857 began practicing law in Clarksburg. He became a member of the well-known law firm of Despard, Maxwell & Goff. | 6014 | Although headstone gives birth date as Apr 4 1851, death record states Apr 4 1852, and age 21 at time of 1873 marriage would also put birth date in 1852. | PERINE, Columbus David (I13936)

| 6018 | Although her birth date is entered in her birth record as Jul 20 1880, which is in keeping with age 17 given in her 1897 marriage record, there are discrepancies that call that into question. In the 1900 Census, her birth date is given as Nov 1881, age 18. However, she appeared in the 1880 Census, enumerated 25 Jun 1880, age 9 months. Birth date on headstone is 1880. | COLLINS, Joanna Lyvinia (I20453)
| 6019 | Although her birth date is given in her marriage and Social Security records as 9 April 1876, the 1880 Census shows her age as 8 months, with birth month specified as April. Her death record incorrectly states her birth date as May 1874 | THOMPSON, Ida Louise (I115684)
| 6020 | Although her birth date is given in her marriage record and in Social Security records as 16 Nov 1928, and the date on her headstone is also 1928, her birth record shows that she was born in 1929. In the 1930 Census, her age was entered as 4/12 (four months). For much of her life, she was known by the name Helen. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses, she was listed as Helen Collins, and in the 1950 Census and her father's obituary as Helen Hendrickson. But she was identified as Sarah Ann Collins in both her birth record and marriage record, and as Sarah Hendrickson in the Social Security Death Index. | COLLINS, Sarah Ann "Helen" (I139263)
| 6021 | Although her birth date is given in the Social Security Death Index as 12 Nov 1915, and the date on her headstone is also 1915, her birth record shows her birth date as 12 Nov 1914. She seems to have been named for the physician who delivered her, Xenia E. Bond. | FLESHER, Xenia Fluence (I30208)
| 6022 | Although her birth date is stated in her death record as Sep 25 1867, the 1900 Census gives it as March 1868. But her marriage record and other census records consistently put her birth in about 1868. She was age 3 in the 1870 Census and age 12 in 1880. The birth date on her headstone appears to be 1861, or possibly 1881, both of which are clearly at variance with the records. | DAILEY, Nancy Ellen (I127044)

| 6027 | Although her death record indicates burial at Kyle Cemetery in Marion County, there is a headstone for her at Martin (Smith) Cemetery in Eldora, Marion County. The birth date on her headstone is 1876, but her birth and death record show that she was born on Dec 5 1877. |
| 6028 | Although her death record indicates burial at McKim Cemetery in Wick, and her obituary states that "Funeral services will be held at McKim," a transcription of burials in the McKim Cemetery at the Tyler County Cemeteries website does not show her grave as being there. |
| 6029 | Although her death record indicates that she died at West Union Star Route, West Union District, Doddridge County, her obituary states that she "died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jasper Scott, of Wilbur." Wilbur is in Tyler County, near the county line with Doddridge. Her death record incorrectly states her birthplace as Tyler County rather than Greene Co Pa., and also incorrectly identifies her father as Jacob Dye rather than Samuel Dye. Informant for her death record was her grandson Dewey Gail Scott. | DYE, Sarah (I69101)
| 6030 | Although her death record reflects a death date of Nov 24 1916, her obituary, published in the "West Union Record" of Thursday, Dec 28 1916, states that she died "last Wednesday at Greenwood." That would reflect a death date of Dec 20 1916. If the Wednesday reference is accurate, the Nov 24th date is incorrect, since Nov 24 1916 fell on a Thursday. Given these factors, and since it is unlikely that a local obituary would be printed a full month after a death, it is more likely that the death record is in error and that the Dec 20th death date is correct. | MEANS, Caroline (I44224)
| 6031 | Although her death record states her age as 21, born in 1919 in Calhoun County, her headstone shows her birthdate as 1918, and her marriage record states her birthplace as Harrison County. | BURROWS, Madeline (I2010)

The 21 Sep 1933 birth date is found in other public records as well. Her 1952 marriage record also shows her birthplace as Marshall County, and the West Virginia Births Index also indicates her birth as Marshall County in 1933. | HICKMAN, Evon Kathleen (I34175)
| 6046 | Although her obituary, death record and headstone show her birth date as Dec 1 1882, her age was given as 18 at the time of her Aug 1898 marriage, the 1900 Census shows her birth date as Dec 1879, the 1920 Census shows her age as 39 (b. 1880 if birth month Dec), and the 1930 Census shows her age as 49 (b. 1880 if birth month Dec). The 1880 Census of Doddridge County, enumerated on Jun 2 1880, identifies her as Lucretia Dotson, age 6 months, a daughter in the household of Joslin & Arasonah Dotson (both age 32), other children Mary E. Dotson (14) and Jenavie Dotson (6). Doddridge County birth records, in the form of a typed transcription of the original ledger record, shows that Lucretia Dotson was born to Jerlean & Arsaniah Dotson on Aug 3 1880, an impossibility in view of her presence the June 1880 Census. | DOTSON, Erma Lucretia "Credie" (I1700)

| 6050 | Although his age is shown on his headstone as 72, placing his birth in about 1834, this is in conflict with various records, which indicate his birth in the early to mid 1840s. The 1900 Census states his birth year as 1842, which is consistent with age 8 in the 1850 Census. His birthplace was given as Ritchie County in his daughter's death record, but as Lewis County in his own marriage record. He appeared in the 1850 Census of Lewis Count, age 8. Many variations of his name are found in the records. | PATTON, Hinton (I70558)
