In any event, an entry for him in found in the 1890 Veterans Census of Ritchie County. | NUTTER, Thomas E. (I22949)

| 6155 | Although the following excerpt from the 1979 "History of Doddridge County," p. 247, states that Jonathan Spurgeon was born on Bear Fork, Doddridge County, documents and records of that time do not support that. He and his family were in Doddridge County at the time of the 1850 Census, but earlier records place them in Preston County. Jonathan's birthplace may have been in Preston County or somewhere in eastern Virginia, but it was not in present-day Doddridge County. "Johnithan (John) [Spurgeon], a frontiersman, was born on Bear Fork, Doddridge County. He located on Bull Run, near Masontown, Preston County. He had 6 boys and 3 girls. They moved from Bull Run to Tom's Fork, Doddridge County in the Pearcy Settlement. From there he came back to Bear Fork of Cove Creek where he resided until his death and was buried in the Boyce Cemetery (located on the Frank Schulte farm on Bear Fork) and was the first to be buried there, he and his wife. Their children were Phillip, Jesse, George, John, James and Jeremiah, sons, and Cathryn, Rachael and Mary Ann, the daughters." | SPURGEON, Jonathan (John) (I37227)

| 6156 | Although the headstone for George Washington Squires shows his death date as 1940, his obituary, appearing in the Jan 3 1940 edition of the Weston Independent, reports his death as occurring "Friday morning at a local hospital." That Friday would have been Dec 29 1939. Lewis County death records also show his death date as Dec 29 1939, so the headstone is clearly in error. It is noteworthy that his headstone is one that appears to have been put in place many years after his death and is shared with his wife and two of their children. | SQUIRES, George Washington (I6292)
| 6157 | Although the local undertaker filed a death record for him in Doddridge County, Charles Harshbarger's obituary states that he "died at the Ebenezer Sanitarium at Bush Colorado, Thursday, Nov. 18, 1915, aged 31 years." Correcting for typographical errors, the location of his death was more accurately Eben Ezer Sanitorium in Brush, Colorado. His middle initial appears to be A in the 1900 Census, and is also A in his obituary. But it's L in another version of his obituary, in the 1910 Census, and in his death record. www.ebenezer-cares.org/index.php?s=14552&item=13012 | HARSHBARGER, Charles (I98480)

| 6170 | Although there is a large upright monument for her at the Williams Maxwell Family Cemetery in New Milton, where her husband is buried, the death date was never inscribed. Rather, there is a small flat marker for her at the Odd Fellows section of Blockhouse Hill Cemetery in West Union. The birth date on that flat marker is incorrectly inscribed as 1862. Her death record also shows her burial at "I.O.O.F., West Union." | MCGOWAN, Harriet Alverta "Vertie" (I42826)

| 6174 | Although this marriage is listed in "Doddridge County WV Marriages," obituary of wife states that they were married in Clarksburg, Harrison County. | Family: Anthony Smith FREEMAN / Mary Bird SMITH (F4004)

| 6176 | Although various records show Stark Corley's birth date as 2 or 20 Nov 1900, this cannot be correct. He appeared with his family in the 1900 Census, enumerated in June 1900, with his age listed as 1 and his birth date as October 1898. He was age 10 in the 1910 Census. His birth date was given in his World War I draft registration as 4 Oct 1899. | CORLEY, Stark (I131728)

| 6180 | Although William McClain's middle name had been widely reported as Dallas, and it is given as such in his daughter Hazel's obituary, there are many variations in the records. It is given as "Dow" in his Social Security application, as "Dowl" in in WW One draft registration, as "Dowel" in his death record, and curiously as "Daniel" in his WW 2 draft registration. In most records, only the middle initial "D" is found. (I33323)
| 6181 | Although Wilson McKinney's obituary identifies him as a son of Joseph & Rose Jones McKinney, the 1930 Census of the Joseph & Rosa J. McKinney household listed him as a grandson, age 6-1/2. | 6186 | Ammi A. Brown was divorced from his third wife, Deborah S., in November 1894. Just over three years later, his marital status was listed as married on his Feb 1898 application to the Washington Soldiers Home. But on his March 1899 application to the Soldiers Home, his entry for marital status was "She has left me, I do not know where she is." Correspondence from his fourth wife Rachel A. Brown and others, found in his Soldiers Home file, shows that Ammi and Rachel were married on Jun 27 1895 in Tacoma, and that she left him in Spring 1898. A letter from her dated Sep 29 1899 indicates that she had not been informed of Ammi's death three months before, supporting his contention that she had deserted him. | Family: Ammi Almanzia BROWN / Rachel A. ___ (F24976)

The Marines were protecting U.S. citizens in Shanghai and aiding the Chinese against Japanese efforts to seize the city.
