6751 At the William Penn Hotel on Sixth Avenue, officiated by Rev. T. Stacey Capers, assistant pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. "The ceremony, which was very quiet, was followed by dinner at the hotel."

In the 1940 Census, Chauncey, along with son Albert, was enumerated in the household of his parents in Parkersburg WV. His marital status was indicated as divorced. His wife was enumerated in the household of her widowed mother and several siblings in Clarksburg WV. Her marital status was also listed as divorced. However, in the 1940 Census, Chauncey and Mary again appeared together as husband and wife.

6755 At time of his death, he had been employed for fifteen years as superintendent of W. Brent Maxwell's farm in Doddridge County. He was mis-identified in son Grant's obit as "Isaac A. Hileman." Son Willis' obituary stated that he was survived by sisters Maysel, Maybell and Pearl, and by "one step-sister, Mrs. Jim (Rachel) Leeson, Oxford." This would actually be a half-sister, Rachel S. Pierce, dau of Willis' mother Lucinda Richmond and her second husband Esta Waitman Pierce. Willis' obituary also states that he was predeceased by nine brothers and five sisters, some of whom, it would seem, were probably step-siblings. Isaac's own obituary contained numerous factual errors regarding names and dates. HILEMAN, Isaac Lynch (I286)

6786 At WVU's West Virginia & Regional History Center in Morgantown is a folder of letters written by Waldo Fitz Randolph to his father, William Fitz Randolph. It appears that Waldo was in a mental institution in Staunton, Virginia at least from 1851 to 1859. In the letters, Waldo described how his fits had lessened and that he wanted to come home to serve the Lord and attend church. The file contains several items of correspondence between Waldo, his father and Waldo's doctor.

Patient records on file in the Western State Hospital Collection at the Library of Virginia show that Waldo F. Randolph was a patient in residence there for 11y 5m 8d, from his admission date on 3 Nov 1851 until his death on 11 Apr 1863. His condition was described as epilepsy, without improvement. A remark in the file made note that his parents were first cousins once removed.

The following account of Waldo F. Randolph's grave is taken from a copyrighted article by Jennifer Wilt of the Doddridge County Heritage Guild and originally printed in "The Doddridge Independent." It appears here with her permission.

"After learning of Waldo’s tortured existence at the Western State Lunatic Asylum in Staunton, Virginia, and his death there at age 35, I found myself deeply affected by it all. I couldn’t stop thinking about Waldo, his reading and re-reading of the Bible, his frustration with not being allowed to attend church services, his likely abuse at the hands of attendants, his own self-mutilation, and his disappointment in never being visited by his family. So I decided to go to Staunton and visit Waldo myself, or at least his grave.

"The Asylum’s fairly large cemetery is on a hillside behind the abandoned building, laid out in ascending rows or tiers, kind of like steps. According to hospital records, Waldo was buried in Plot 20, Grave 42. The numbering system is based on the tier number and the grave number, from left to right. Waldo was buried on the twentieth tier, forty-second burial from the left.

"As I was walking up the tiers, I noticed that although there were burials beyond Tier 19, there were very few headstones. This was probably due to the sudden limited resources brought about by the Civil War. Since I knew the graves were numbered left to right, using the spacing of the headstones in lower tiers, I was able to pinpoint the location of Waldo’s grave. Sadly, Waldo’s grave does not have a headstone. At some point after his burial, a tree had grown at the spot where Waldo is buried. That tree has since been cut down, and all that remains is a large stump [featured photo].

"While staring at the stump that marks Waldo’s grave, I had to wonder if anyone else had ever stood on that spot and mourned not only his passing, but also mourned for the young well-intentioned man who had lived such a miserable life, institutionalized for eleven years and dying alone in a lunatic asylum almost two hundred miles from home.

"Waldo died in April 1863 at the height of the Civil War. Western Virginia, where Waldo’s family lived in Doddridge County, had already seceded from old Virginia, where Waldo died. I doubt that his siblings could have traveled that far south during wartime even if they had wanted to. Waldo was most likely laid to rest with little or no ceremony. If a headstone or marker was placed there at the time of his burial, there is no trace of it now, and no family member has since taken steps to provide one. Lacking that, I take comfort in knowing that providence has seen fit to give Waldo’s grave a distinctive marker of another type, what I think of simply as Waldo’s Stump."
