  As great-grandchildren of Peter Davis & Sarah "Sally" Davis, Riley G. Davis & Viola H. Davis were second cousins. 1900 Census, Ritchie Co, WV (Union District), enumerated on Jun 6/7 1900: Riley G. Davis, 37, b. May 1863, preacher, married 17 yrs; wife Viola H, 39, b. May 1861, married 17 yrs, no children; mother-in-law Mary A. Davis, 61, b. Jan 1839, widowed, 2 children (both still living); lodger Arthur G. H. Davis, 8, b. 1891. All born in West Virginia. Note: Arthur G. H. Davis was born Arthur George Hughes, son of John R. Hughes & Armeda Nicholson. After his mother's death in 1893, he was raised by Riley & Viola Davis and went by the Davis surname from that time forward.
