Jonathan Tate, 36, farmer, indicated as being "maimed, crippled, bedridden or otherwise disabled," cannot read/write; wife Selina, 36, cannot read/write; son Iley S, 15, attended school within the year, cannot read/write; day Ida O, 13, attended school, cannot read/write; son William P, 11, attended school, cannot read/write; son Charles F, 10; son Phinando J, 9; dau Mary E, 4; son Henry L, 1; boarder John A. Allen, 22, farm laborer; boarder James Allen, 17, farm laborer. All born in Virginia/West Virginia except Mary and the two boarders, born in Ohio.
In September 1890, Jonathan Tate wss sentenced to nine years in the Western State Penitentiary, Pittsburgh, for the crime of rape. The prison's Descriptive List for him shows that he had 14 prior convictions, that he had only eight days of public schooling, and that he had served in the Civil War with Co E, 3rd W.Va. Cavalry. He was paroled after seven years.
