Notes - According to the History of Doddridge County (1979), p. 362, Sylvester Jett moved with his parents from Barbour County to Ritchie County at the age of three (about 1849), remaining there until 1910, when he sold his farm and moved to West Union, Doddridge County. He was enumerated in West Union in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. But the following news article in the Aug 6 1915 issue of the Ritchie Gazette contradicts that timeline, indicating that there may be a bit more to the story.
SURPRISE PARTY
On Sunday, July 25, at his home on Bear run, Ritchie county, Sylvester Jett was pleasantly surprised by his children and grandchildren who came to spend the day in honor of his 69th birthday. Mr. Jett and wife are the parents of thirteen sons and daughters, all of whom are living, and in spite of his near three score and ten years, this sturdy old veteran of the Civil War still retains remarkable mental powers. This pleasant occasion perhaps was unsurpassed by any of the younger folks.
The visitors brought well filled lunch baskets and a pleasant dinner was served on the lawn. When the time for parting came, all joined in declaring the day a delightful one, and in wishing Mr. Jett and his wife many happy returns of the day.
