George W. Kerns, 29, b. Aug 1870, farm laborer, married 10 yrs; wife Clara, 34, b. Nov 1865, married 10 yrs, mother of 5 children (4 still living); dau Lovie, 9, b. Sep 1890; dau Lillie, 6, b. Mar 1894; son Sherley, 4, b. Jan 1896; son Gilbert, 2, b. Dec 1897; brother Homer, 17, b. Aug 1882. All born in West Virginia.
Clara died sometime between 1902 and 1910. We have not found a record of her death.
In the 1910 Census of Gilmer County, Center District, George W. Kerns, widowed, was living alone. The next enumerated household was that of his married brother Homer and his family. George and Clara's children had been separated and placed in various other households. They were enumerated in the 1910 Census as follows:
Lovie Kerns, 19, was listed as a servant in the household of James Henry Goff, his wife Susan and their family in DeKalb District, Gilmer County. In 1917, Lovie married their son Alfred Scott Goff.
Lillie, listed as Lillian, 16, was in the household of her uncle Albert J. Kerns, his wife Virginia Flanagan Kerns, and their children in Tenmile District, Harrison County. In 1916, Lillian married Clell Anderson Flanagan, nephew of Virginia Flanagan Kerns.
Sherley, listed as Shirley Kerns, 14, was a boarder in the household of widow Elizabeth Fling, 85, in Murphy District, Ritchie County. There was no one else in the household, although the next household was that of Perry J. Fling, 39, and his family. As early as 1917, Shirley changed the spelling of his surname to Kern.
Gilbert, listed as Shelley Kearns, was a boarder in the household of Thomas T. & Emma Goff in Murphy District, Ritchie County. He was later known as Gilbert Shelley Kern.
Arlie Kerns, age 8, was listed as an adopted son in the household of Oliver L. & Ida B. (Nutter) Davis. He later changed the spelling of his name to Kearns. He died in Ohio in November 1955.
