| Notes |
- An explanation of the change of his surname from Cottrill to Childers is reported on Findagrave as follows:
"Walter Ernest Childers was born Walter Ernest Cottrill in 1883. In early 1884 his mother Mary Ross Cottrill died. His father Edward Cottrill decided it would be best for the children: Icy Victoria, Charles and baby Ernie to be fostered out. Icy and Charles to their grandparents Ross and the baby, who was probably only about 3 months old, to a relative on Mary's side of the family. He kept the name "Cottrill" until sometime after 1900. Before 1907, when he married Odie Yost, he changed to Childers. There is no formal record of this, to my knowledge."
