- Obituary, Kansas City (Missouri) Star, Sunday, Dec 14 1919, page 2A, in its entirety:
GASSED 11 MONTHS AGO, DIES
HORACE S. TUCKER WAS A FARRIER IN 129TH FIELD ARTILLERY
Horace S. Tucker, 35 years old, 1940 North Fifth Street, Kansas Side, formerly a farrier in Battery B, 129th field artillery, died Friday night at Bethany hospital, on the Kansas Side, from the effects of gassing he suffered October 2, 1918, in the Argonne Forest. Tucker was cited by General Pershing. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Frank Fisher, with whom he lived, and Mrs. William Shafer of St. Louis.
Funeral Services will be at 10 o'clock tomorrow from Long's chapel, Tenth street and Minnesota avenue, Kansas Side. The pallbearers will be former members of the battery.
NOTE: According to family tradition, Horace Tucker understated his age in order to be accepted for military service. That could account for the incorrect age (he was actually 42) given in his obituary. Also according to family tradition, Horace had given his gas mask to a much younger soldier without one, reasoning that the other soldier deserved an opportunity to live a fuller life as he had.
