- Neither the precise name nor gender of this child of Vincent & Olive (Bonnell) Ash is entirely clear. Doddridge County birth records show a son named Berlin R. Ash born to them on March 7, 1898. There is nothing in the record to indicate that it was anything but a single live birth. It is noteworthy, however, that the birth record is an entry in a typewritten alpabetized ledger transcribed from original handwritten records. Every birth listed on that page originally indicated the gender as Male, with several of them later corrected by hand to read Female.
In the 1900 Census, the family included not a son Berlin R. Ash, but a daugher Rachel B. Ash, born March 1898. A weathered headstone at Underwood Cemetery in Ashley is inscribed "Burlin R, Dau of V. & O.S. Ash, born Mar 7 1898, died Jan 12 1901." The inscription becomes readable in a photo of the chalked headstone taken by Jennifer Wilt, affiliated with this website. It appears, then, that the gender entered in the birth record was in error, and that the child was a daughter whose full name was Burlin Rachel Ash.
