John Sommerville's primary residence at that time is thought to have been in or near Clarksburg, Harrison County, with a secondary residence as an inn or tavern stand in the community then known as Middle Island in present-day Doddridge County.
The handwritten letter from Nathan Davis to John Kennedy is transcribed as follows:
"Mr. John Kenedy,
Take notice that on the 14th 15th 16th days of May 1818 at the dwelling house of Major John Sommerville on Middle Island Creek in Harrison County, I shall proceed to take the depositions of sundry witnesses to be read as evidence in the suit now depending in the Superior Court of Chancery at Clarksburg wherein I am complainant and you are defendant. -- 8th May 1818.
