- In 1737, William Westfall moved with his parents to present Moorefield, West Virginia. In 1748, he moved with his parents to a nearby 400-acre farm on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River. He wed Elizabeth Thorne, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Thorne, in Hampshire County in 1758. In April of 1758, William, along with brother Abel, joined with Tobias Decker to establish the Decker Colony at Decker Creek near present Morgantown, West Virginia. The colony was attacked by thirty Delaware Indians on October 16, 1759, and eight people killed. Abel was taken prisoner and later escaped, but his wife and son were killed. William and Elizabeth returned to Hampshire County, where the first six of their thirteen children were born.
