- Thomas Jefferson Corley joined the county militia known as the "Bath Rifles." On April 9, 1862,the 59 officers and men of the militia were enlisted as Co. K, 52nd VA Infantry. Joining Stonewall Jackson, they participated in the Battle of McDowell and the Valley Campaign. They saw action at Winchester, Cross Keys and Port Republic. In this battle on June 9, l862, Thomas was wounded in the foot, arm and breast. He died of these wounds on June 21 at the Confederate Hospital, Charlottesville and was buried at the cemetery now on the grounds of the University of Virginia. On June 24, 1989, 127 years after his death, a marker was placed on his grave by descendants. [Name on marker: Thomas Jefferson Cauley] A military ceremony was conducted by the l9th Va.
