    • The Company Descriptive Book on file at the National Archives (fold3.com) shows that Jacob F. Gabbert enlisted as a Private in Company M, 1st West Virginia Cavalry on 22 Feb 1865 in Grafton, W.Va, for a term of one year. Enlistment officer was Capt. James Evans. Physical description: Age 33, height 5'10", fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair. Birthplace Augusta Co, Virginia. Occupation farmer. A notation states that the recruit was entitled to a bounty, but there is no indication that a bounty was paid.

      The following relevant entries are found in the military record of Pvt Jacob F. Gabbert, Co M, 1st W.Va. Cavalry
      :
      March 1865 - Gain recruit from Depot. Absent in remount camp.
      April 1865 - Absent recruit in remount camp.
      June 1865 - Absent without leave.

      In a document dated 28 March 1892, the Record & Pension Division of the War Deparment ruled as follows:
      "Application for removal of the charge of desertion and for an honorable discharge has been denied."

      Five years later, the Record & Pension Office made the following entry in Jacob F. Gabbert's record:
      "It has this day, Nov 1, 1897, been determined by the Department from the records and testimony on file that the charge of absence without leave on the company muster-out roll against this soldier's record is erroneous, and that he died at his home at Grafton, W.Va., on June 28, 1865.
      "The notation of March 28, 1892 is canceled."
