- He was educated in the Tyler County school system, Salem College and West Virginia University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. His first job was with Wetzel County School System as an instructor of veterans, 1949-50. He then went on to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Soil Conservation Service in Nicholas and Kanawha Counties 1951-67. He finished his career in Morgantown at the Soil Conservation Service State Office as Personnel Officer 1967-69 and State Administrative Officer 1970-1977.
