| Notes |
- 1850 Census, Gilmer County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on August 5, 1850:
J. L. Night, 42, farmer, value of real estate $500; Mary, 25; Valentine, 10; Daniel, 6; Philip, 2. All born in Virginia.
Note: There appear to be some errors in the entries of the children's names. Valentine was presumably entered for Martin Van Buren Knight, and Daniel was actually David Wilson Knight, both children of Joshua's first wife Mary Shuttlesworth. Whereabouts of their third child, Hiram J. Knight, is not known. Joshua and his second wife Mary Modisett's first child was James Philip Knight, born in 1848.
