    • Joshua Adams had six children by his first wife, Lovinia May Leeson; all six were boys and five of them were carpenters. Joshua built many houses himself. Joshua ran a general store that kept his team and driver on the road six days a week hauling supplies from Toll Gate.

      1860 Census, Doddridge County, (W)VA, enumerated on 7 July 1860:
      Joshua Adams, 23, farmer, value of real estate $300, value of personal estate $200; L., 24 (female) [Lovinia]; M., 4 (male) [Marshall]; J., 2 (male) [Joseph]. All born in Virginia.

      Joshua's wife Lovinia Leeson died in April 1869.

      In the 1870 Census, their sons Marshall, Joseph, Marion and William were enumerated in the household of Lovinia's father William D. Leeson in Central District, Doddridge County. Their son Alonzo Adams was enumerated in the household of Joshua's brother William Adams II in Union District, Ritchie County. Their son Samuel Adams was enumerated in the household of Lovinia's half-brother Leroy Leeson in Central District, Doddridge County. Samuel remained in that household for the 1880 Census. We have been unable to determine Joshua Adams' whereabouts in the 1870 Census.

      Joshua remarried Sarah Elizabeth Woofter on 6 Dec 1870 in Ritchie County. [9]

Ceremony held Feb 15 1856 at Cabin run. Based on information found in other sources, particularly The History of Doddridge Co, p. 67, it appears that the names of the parents of the bride and groom were reversed in the marriage record.
