| Notes |
- Alton Childers was a teacher for 40 years in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, with more than 20 years in West Virginia schools. One of the founders of the Doddridge County Historical Society, he authored a regular local history column, "Mostly About Ourselves," in the West Union newspaper. As a Navy Lieutenant in World War II, he received the Purple Heart for wounds received when his ship was torpedoed twice in the Fall of 1942.

CHILDERS BUYS DOAK FARM
Ora Doak of Smithburg, well-known merchant and farmer, has sold his 282-acre farm in that community to Alton Childers, school teacher, who recently received his discharge from the U.S. Navy. Childers paid $11,280.00 for the farm. He also purchased the farm machinery, sheep and part of the cattle. [1, 5]
