There is some doubt as to the validity of this marriage. The record shows that G. A. Ross, age 35, born in Doddridge Co [sic], and Brida Sutton, age 25, born in Doddridge Co, were granted a marriage license on July 27 1897, but the "Minister's Return or Indorsement" was not completed to indicate that the ceremony ever took place. Person providing information for the license was identified as C. A. Sutton. George Ross and wife of 4 years, "Bridy," were in the 1900 Census of Harrison County with their son Ray and George's 3 children from his previous marriage. Doddridge County death records, DR 2-135, show Brida Ross, married, age 47, died of a fractured spine at Blandville on Jul 30 1918 (two years before George's marriage to Sarah Melissa Greathouse). Brida was buried at Middle Island 7th Day Baptist Church Cemetery, where George too was buried. Brida's headstone bears the inscription "Brida - Wife of G. A. Ross - Apr 11 1872 - Jul 30 1918." George's obituary, however, made no mention of a wife other than Emma Elizabeth Putnam, although the obituary of Sarah Melissa Greathouse Ross named George as a surviving husband and named his two sons by Emma Putnam as surviving stepchildren.
