    • Before her marriage to Alexander Walker, Esther Gaston was cited for her heroic deeds during the American Revolution. During the Battle of Rocky Mount, when she saw three men fleeing, she asked to take their arms and fight in the battle herself. This prompted the men to return to the fighting. With patriotic spirits and kind hearts, she and her sister-in-law aided the wounded and dying during the Battles of Rocky Mount and Hanging Rock, dressing the wounds and quenching the thirsts of the seriously injured.
