- Our efforts to identify the parents of Bazil Rowe were made difficult by the various spellings of his name, both first and last. Based strictly on census records, starting with 1900 and working backward, we found the following:
In 1900, Bazil was with wife Nancy and one child.
1900 Census, Columbiana Co, OH (Town of East Palestine), enumerated on Jun 6 1900 at Clark Street:
Basil Raugh, 65, b. Jul 1834 in Ohio (father b. Pennsylvania, mother b. Ohio), occupation presser in pottery, married 25 yrs; wife Nancy, 46, b. Apr 1854 in Indiana (both parents b. Ohio), married 25 yrs, mother of 4 children (all still living); son Charles A, 16, b. Mar 1884 in Ohio, occupation stable hand.
In 1880, he was with wife Nancy and their children.
1880 Census, Columbiana Co, OH (Middleton Twp), enumerated in June 1880:
Bazzem Rowe, 48, b. Ohio (both parents born in Virginia), occupation sawyer; wife Nancy, 26, b. Indiana (both parents b. Ohio); dau Laura G, 7, b. Ohio; dau Mary, 4, b. Ohio; son Walter, 6 months, b. Ohio; boarder John Macauley, 48, b. Ohio, married, occupation miller.
(Note: The next household was that of Nancy's parents and siblings.)
In 1870, we couldn't find Bazil, but we did find someone else who would prove to be relevant.
1870 Census, Columbiana Co, OH (Liverpool Twp, Wellsville post office), enumerated on Jun 1 1870:
Pleasey Rough, 79, b. Virginia; David H. Russell, 27, b. Virginia, laborer; Amanda Russell, 20, b. Ohio.
In 1860, he was with his first wife, Elizabeth, and their children.
1860 Census, Columbiana Co, OH (Liverpool Twp, East Liverpool post office), enumerated on Jun 7 1860:
Bazel Rough, 25, b. Ohio, occupation (blank), value of real estate (blank), value of personal estate $30; Elizabeth, 26, b. Ohio; Enma, 7, b. Ohio; Therrssa, 4, b. Ohio; Darrah, 4, b. Ohio
In 1850, he was with his parents:
1850, Columbiana County (Liverpool Twp), enumerated on Jul 11 1850:
John Raugh, 73, b. Pennsylvania, farmer, value of real estate $2,000; Placey, 57, b. Virginia; Bazaleel, 18, b. Ohio, boatman; Philip, 20, b. Ohio, boatman; Matilda McCullough, 35, b. Ohio; Amanda McCullough, 6 months, b. Ohio.
So Bazil Rowe's original name was apparently Bazaleel Raugh, which varies slightly from the Biblical name Bezaleel.

Although relationships are not stated in the 1850 Census, it appears evident that John Raugh (or Rough) and Pleasey are Bazil's parents. The ages fit, and their birthplaces more or less match those given by Bazil in 1880 and 1900. Birthplaces in census records can be very helpful, but also are not always completely accurate. In this case, the 1850 Census (in which the information was provided by the individuals themselves) clarifies the minor discrepancies of the 1880 and 1900 censuses. So John Raugh was definitely born in Pennsylvania. And Pleasey was born in Virginia, which may actually be present-day West Virginia, which was still Virginia until 1863. [4]
