    • Letter to the Editor, titled "From Gilmer County," appearing in the "Weston Democrat," May 3 1879:
      Editor Democrat:
Last October Rev. Eli Martin, of the U. B. Church, assisted Rev. S. J. Graham, of Troy charge, in a series of meetings at Stewards Creek. In one of Mr. Martin's sermons, he related an incident which occurred several years ago at Buckeye Tunnel, where a young man, on the night of his conversion, handled the hot stove and red hot cinders. The statement has been paraded before the people of this county as a base falsehood, and Mr. Martin the originator of it. I send you an abridgement of a sworn statement by the father of the young man, in relation to the matter, and an abundance of other evidence to the facts of the case can be obtained in the same community:

      BUCKEYE RUN, W.VA.
This is to certify that I, Isaac Stutler, father of A. H. Stutler, was present when my son handled the red hot cinders. I was sitting against the pulpit; the back part of the stove was red hot, and had been red hot all over a few minutes before. Some young men had promised by son to go forward to the altar with him, but failed to do so, and when he professed religion, he went back to them in the congregation and they cursed him, saying that there was no such a thing as religion. My son got down before them and prayed, asking God to give him more faith, when he turned around and took hold of the stove, and then reached down into the stove and took out the red hot cinders, holding them in his hands and presenting them at the same time to the people in attestation of his conversion. I took hold of his wrists and turned his hands over, and the cinders fell out upon the floor, and they were so hot that the smoke arose from the floor. I supposed that his hands would be so burnt that they would have to be amputated, but not so; there was not a mark of fire upon his hands.
      /signed/ Dr. Isaac Stutler
Sworn and subscribed to before me, this, the 11th day of December, 1878.
      W. M. Riggs, Justice of Grant District, Doddridge County, West Virginia
      /signed/ W. M. Riggs

Now, Mr. Editor, while we may not be able to explain this phenomenon, yet we have no right to berate an aged minister of the gospel for simply relating the circumstance to an audience. A certain character has been making himself very conspicuous in the matter by saying that Mr. Martin told a lie in the pulpit, and called upon Mr. Graham to verify it. We have simply written this statement in defense of the above named gentleman, whose truthfulness cannot be impeached. The father of the young man also sends the following statement in a note to the writer: "There are several persons who are ready to be qualified to the fact that I have sworn to." We hope if anyone hereafter is to be branded with falsehood, that the person doing so will please say that the father of boy lies, not Mr. Martin. JUSTICE

The 3-yr-old L. would be son Charles Leonidas. The 1-yr-old M. appears to be son Warner, whose entry could be read as an M or possibly as a W. Exact identity of J. Bee is not clear, but she may be the Mary Jane Bee (1840-1914) who married Isaac's half-brother Vincent Stutler in 1865.
