- Following their marriage, J.D. and Etta Maude lived near his parents near Little Skin Creek in Lewis County, WV. The valley where they lived is now covered by Stonewall Jackson Reservoir. J.D. suffered from "brow ague" (sinus trouble) and needed a drier climate. Also wanting better opportunities for their children, they decided to move west. They bought land near Cimarron, Kansas, and in 1903 moved there with their six children. Traveling by train, J.D. rode in a boxcar with the family belongings, while his wife took the children in the passenger car. They also built a house in town so the children could attend school. They remained in the Cimarron area for the rest of their lives. [3]
