    Notes 
    • Winfield Scott Stuart was a prominent lawyer of West Union, a former prosecuting attorney of Doddridge County, and a B&O attorney for several years before retiring in 1946. He also was attorney for local several gas companies, and was divorce commissioner of Circuit Court for many years. The home he built in West Union in about 1915, plans for which were drawn by his wife Nannie, was placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1993 and is still in use as a law office.

      "S. W. Stuart's new building near the court house looks more like a palace every day. When completed, it will be the most imposing appearing residence in town."

      "Work is progressing nicely on W. S. Stuart's new home just east of the Public Square, and each week as the workmen labor, new beauties are revealed. When completed, it will compare very favorably with the best residences in larger towns, such as Clarksburg, Parkersburg or Huntington. Such improvements add very materially to the value of every adjacent property; hence, we should all take a pride in them, and at least speak some word of encouragement for those who are making West Union a bigger and better town."

      "W. S. Stuart has completed the green tile roof on his splendid new residence and, needless to say, it is by far the most beautiful we have ever seen in this section of the country."

      "W. S. Stuart is laying a fine cement walk from the Republican office up Columbian Street to the corner opposite the West Union Bank, out Court Street to the corner opposite the Public Square and down the street, towards Howard Fountain to the Foley property line."

      "H. E. Harshbarger, an Elkins plumber, assisted by A. C. Tarr of this place, are plumbing the fine new residence of W. S. Stuart on Chancery Avenue. Mr. Cell, an electrician of Clarksburg, is wiring the house, which when completed will be one of the finest in the city.
