- After retirement, he delivered and picked up cars for Allens and other local car dealerships. He made one of his last trips when he was 89 years old with his son, Chuck. They traveled 1,070 miles in a brief 21 hours to Chicago, IL, to pick up a car. He also was the driver for the Ritchie County Express (Dave, Bob Wilson, Harold Shive, and Clyde Hopkins). On one occasion, when venturing deep into a rural area, they wound up needing to be rescued from an unsuccessful creek crossing. He loved being on the road! He was a lifetime member of the DAV Chapter Snake State #14 and VFW Post #355. He was a Little League coach and also umpired many games. He kept score for both the Pennsboro Cardinals and Ritchie County Rebels basketball teams starting in the 1960s, attending thousands of games until his retirement in 2004.
