Note: This verse is quoted in the 1808 book "Biography for Boys; or, characteristic histories calculated to impress the ... mind with an admiration for virtuous principles, etc." Third edition, by Mrs. Mary Pilkington. The author quotes it at the end of a chapter about a young British military hero, Duncan Malcolm, who died in 1798 at age 41. That verse was engraved on Duncan Malcolm's headstone.

- Rufus Brown left no will. The only record found of his death is his headstone, the weathered inscription on which was originally reported by Findagrave.com in early 2011 as "In memory of RUFUS BROWN, who died July 6th 1832, aged 66 years." But there was an error in the transcription of the badly worn marker. Given his documented Aug 1771 birth date, it was almost certain that either his age was other than 66, or that his death date was other than 1832. In July 2023, another reading of the headstone revealed that although the death date was indeed July 6th 1832, the age at death was actually 60, not 66. A rubbing of the headstone made the age 60 unmistakably clear, putting it in alignment with his birth date.
Rufus was survived by his wife Mary, who died in January 1838. A record of their children's names is found in Grantor Record Book 65, p. 413, Cooperstown NY, dated Feb 29 1840, in which the children of Rufus Brown signed a Conveyance-Indenture transferring ownership of his property to them. This was presumably done as part of the settlement of the estate of Rufus's estate, or perhaps Mary's. Rufus and Mary probably died in Otsego County, their last known residence and the place of their burial.

No entry for this Rufus Brown was found in the 1820 Census. There is a Rufus Brown and his family listed in that census in the town of Thompson in Windham County, but that was found through probate records to be a different Rufus Brown, who died in 1825 and whose wife was Huldah.

Rufus Brown died in July 1832 and was survived by his wife Mary, who died in January 1838.
