He reenlisted in March 1777 under Capt Feltner and was discharged in October 1777. He reenlisted in 1778 and helped build a fort at West Point, after which he was ordered to the frontier and served until December 25, 1779. After discharge, he moved to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and later to Virginia. Part of the time of his service was as a volunteer, and part was as a substitute for his father, John Neely Sr. Born in Neelytown, New York, he was one of three brothers. On Oct 29 1845, Margaret Neely (possibly his second wife) deposed that she was the widow of John Neely, a Revolutionary solder and pensioner. Her claim was allowed and a pension was granted to her. The grave of John Neely, at Broad Run Baptist Cemetery in Lewis County, West Virginia, has a plaque describing his Revolutionary War service, placed there by the DAR.
