- During his military career as a medical specialist, he served in various posts in the United States and overseas in Korea, Japan and Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action as a combat medic in Korean during the Battle of Kunu-ri, November 1950, for saving several lives while under fire. After retiring from the Army as a Sergeant First Class in June 1969 after 23 years of service, he worked as an inspector for the West Virginia State Road Commission for several years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, Post 9151, in Salem.
