    • Subsequent to completing his freshman year at Salem College, he was inducted into the U.S. Army in September 1943. After induction into the U.S. Army, he volunteered for service in the paratroops. He received his jump wings at Fort Benning, Georgia, and then was assigned to Company A, 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division, whose motto was “Thunder From Heaven.” The division entered combat in Europe at Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. Robert received three bronze campaign stars for the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns.

    Notes 
    • Following discharge from the Army, Robert returned to Salem College and received a bachelor’s degree in 1950. After seven years of employment in private industry, in 1958 he began teaching in the field of secondary education in Conneaut, Ohio, at Rowe High School. During the period of 1962-1990, Robert taught secondary mathematics at East High School in Erie, Pennsylvania, and at Tech Memorial High School, also in Erie. He continued his studies during employment and obtained masters degrees from West Virginia University and Edinboro State University. He also obtained a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Psychology at Edinboro State University. He participated in occupational-related study at Luther College, Case Institute of Technology and the College of William and Mary, retiring in 1990.

      Subsequent to retirement, Robert fulfilled a lifelong dream of obtaining a private pilot’s license. He served eight years on the Girard School Board and eight years as a member of the operating committee of the Erie County Technical School. He served a year as treasurer of each of those boards and one year as chairman of the operating committee of the Erie County Technical School. He was a life member of Girard American Legion Post No. 494, where he held various offices and served on the funeral ritual team. He was a life member of Post No. 7794 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. Robert had a lifelong interest in genealogy and was a life member of the National Genealogical Society. He was especially pleased to be able to trace his ancestry to the Mayflower, a surety for the Magna Carta, and to Charlemagne.
