    Notes 
    • When William Notley Bates died in 1891, his widow Rachel was left with three young daughters ranging in age from 9 months to 6 years. Rachel remarried Henry M. Slater two years later, but her daughters were apparently not taken into the new household. None of them were with her and her new family in the 1900 Census. Daughter Sarah Mae was listed as a servant in the household of a young family in Wetzel County. Daughter Carrie was living in the household of an elderly distant relative and his new wife. The whereabouts of daughter Ruth Gay in the 1900 Census could not be determined, but she had apparently married in late 1899 using the name Ola Bates. Sarah Mae and Carrie married in 1903 and 1905 respectively. The three sisters were not long-lived, two of them dying from medical issues at ages 48 and 50, and the third dying at age 54 from injuries in an automobile accident.
