- A Navy Corpsman/Hospitalman, Erner Dale Phillips volunteered for duty with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Attached to the 1st Marine Division, he took part in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, in which Chinese forces lured 30,000 UN troops into a trap and encircled them with 120,000 troops. The 17-day battle was fought in frigid conditions from 27 November to 13 December 1950. Wounded in action, Erner Phillips was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.
