      1880 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (Southwest District), enumerated on Jun 1 1880:
      John H. Gaston, 68, farmer; wife Jane, 64; son Hugh, 24, farm worker; brother-in-law William Pritchard, 61, physician. The 1880 Census form contains the following question: "Is the person [on the day of the Enumerator's visit] sick or temporarily disabled, so as to be unable to attend to ordinary business or duties? If so, what is the sickness or disability?" For John H. Gaston, that question was answered with the entry "Epileptic Fits." [8]

      Age given as 37 as of the data collection date of July 24 1850, making him born in late 1812 or early 1813.

      The 1880 Census listed him as 68, putting his birth in 1811 or 1812

      Family information survey completed by grand-nephew Ira Dow Gaston stated his birth as July 17 1812 in Harrison Co.

      Entry shows a John H. Gaston, b. 1813 in Virginia, and a Jane "Richards" marrying on Feb 2 1847. Despite the name variance, this is considered to be the same couple. Mary Jane Pritchard did go by her middle name. But Wes Cochran's "Ritchie County WV Marriages 1843-1915" shows the same couple with a marriage date of Feb 2 1848. The later date is considered more likely.
