Gov. Boreman,
Dear Sir,
Capt Holdridge S. Sayre of this County wishes a recruiting commission under the Presidents last call for 500000 men. Mr. Sayre can recruit a good many men in our county, and I believe would be the most successful man in that way that could be [?] commending.
Please send him a commission I am anxious that [?] should avoid a dr [?].
Yours with highest respects
C. J. Stuart

| Notes |
- 1860 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on July 23 1860:
Holdridge Sayre, 26, constable, value of real estate (blank), value of personal estate $200; Catherine Gatrell, 55, unable to read & write; Cassandra Gatrell, 19; Ducket Gatrell, 17; William Gatrell, 15; Ottmar A. Gatrell, 4.
(NOTE: This census entry raises several questions. Had Thomas Gatrell died between 1850 and 1860? We've found no record of his death. What was the relationship between Holdridge Sayre and the Gatrell family? What was Cassandra Gatrell's marital status? She had married William W. Lewis in 1858, but she appears here as though single, and he appears in the same census with a different wife. Who was Ottmar Gatrell? It is believed that he was a son of Cassandra Gatrell and Solomon Poe. Cassandra was not found in the 1870 Census. The last record of her was in the 1880 Census, when she was listed as a patient at the Weston Insane Asylum in Lewis County.)
