Age 22 in his 1882 marriage record would put it in about 1860, while the 1900 Census shows it as Sep 1850, age 50, and age 53 in the 1910 Census puts it in about 1857. However, the birth date on his headstone is 1845, with his death record specifying it as July 4 1845. But he did not appear with his family in the 1850 Census, and ages 5 and 16 in the 1860 and 1870 censuses put his birth in about 1854 or 1855. The latter two records appear to be the most reliable.
William's middle initial is given in his wife's death record, in their son Roy's marriage record, and in son James' WW I draft registration as M, But the initial on his headstone and in the 1933 City Directory is H. The birth record of son Winfield identifies his parents as William Henry Cain (b. Masontown Pa.) and Lily Mae Douglas (b. Johnstown WVa).
