Notes:

After the death of their mother when they were aged two and one, respectively, James Morris Jones and his brother Howard were reared in the home of their grandfather, Samuel Morris Gaston, and his second wife Rebecca Jane Furner Gaston. James spent four years in the Navy before getting married. He and family resided in Castleberry, Alabama from 1927 to 1930, then returned to West Virginia. During WW II, he and his wife moved to Baltimore, where he worked in the shipyards and she at an airplane factory. They returned to West Virginia only to have their home washed away by the great flood of 1950.

Died:
The History of Doddridge County, West Virginia, p. 178, gives death in 1954 in Smithburg. "West Union WV Cemeteries" reports headstone reading of Apr 19 1954, and researcher Marilynn Davis Jones also specifies Apr 19 1954, while Ota Reed Fraker reports Apr 19 1957, clearly incorrect. But Doddridge County Death Record and WV State Death Certificate both state Apr 20 1954 in Smithburg. Obituary specifies day of week as Monday at 11 p.m., which would coincide with Apr 19 1954.

Notes:

After the death of their mother in 1890, Howard Harrison Jones and his brother James were reared in the home of their grandfather, Samuel Morris Gaston, and his second wife Rebecca Jane Furner Gaston. Howard graduated from Glenville College in 1916, and was principal of Hillsboro Grade School in Pocahontas Co, WV. During the school year he was called into the Army due to World War I and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. He was discharged in 1918. He became Superintendent of Doddridge County Schools for eight years. He and wife Miriam served as counselors at Camp Lightfoot, near Hinton, attended by some 800 miners' children. Birth date reported as Jan 23 1889 in "History of Doddridge County" (p. 177) and by first cousin Ota Reed Fraker. Obituary and headstone state Jan 27 1889. Death certificate, while not specifying birth date, states age at birth as 59y 6m 29d, which calculates to a birth date of Jan 22 1889. Death certificate states place of birth as Doddridge County, while all other sources indicate Ritchie County.

Died:
Suffered a heart attack at Camp Thomas Lightfoot, near Hinton, Summers Co, WV. He was serving as an instructor in the camp, operated by a southern West Virginia coal company for the benefit of its employees' children. (obit)
