    A notation in the column for illness or medical conditions indicates that he was afflicted with scrofula, a tuberculous infection of the skin on the neck.

    Census:
    "History of Ritchie County," p. 236, incorrectly states that John Nelson Nutter settled in California, and his brother William Thomas Nutter in Kansas. The reverse was true.
